If you think about it almost everyone is. Very few people have the same drive and determination that Schwarzenegger in his hey day nor should they. The thing I find is that for the average person (even the ones who want to be strong like Ahnold) it limits what they consider exercise for fear of not being good at it. When in fact there is a great big wide world out there filled with things designed to get you moving, make you strong and the best of all put a big old smile on your face.

What will change…

My goal is to experience the great big physical world out there. Often failing, looking foolish and laughing it off. In turn I invite you to do the same. We need to stop working out and start living fit…

What stays the same…

I’m still going to post workouts weekly to give you more fit-tools to work with. Resistance training and cardio are still important but the approach taken will be to demystify them so they work better for you. This way you have more time and energy to try the fun stuff…

So in the latest episodes of Girls on HBO. Lena Dunham’s character has a random hookup with an recently divorced doctor played by Patrick Wilson. The outrage wasn’t about the near anonymous hookup with a stranger. Certain people believed the episode was unbelievable because Lena Dunham’s character was clearly out of her league. Really? Because she’s heavier? If that is the case certain popular TV and movie characters are definitely out of their league.

I really can go on because that seems to be the norm in Hollywood.

Why is it ok for a heavier guy to get the girl but if it’s the other way around the girls is out of that guys league? And if the gap is acknowledged it is because the guy has money or power. Why can’t people enjoy the company of whoever they damn well please without other people saying anything?

As I said before one of the few exceptions to this experiment is the 35lb kettlebell that Meret got me for Christmas. This morning I made use of that exception in the basement of my building. You see I live in a very tiny apartment and working out at 5am keeps my girlfriend awake. So I used the long hallway to do backwards walking tactical lunges and then I did walking kettlebell swings going forward. When I got to the end of the hallway I ran all the way to the 9th floor of my building and back down . I did this routine 5 times. Then I did my mile.

Dumbbell clean and press. This is the best full body exercise you probably aren’t doing. The reason I say it’s the best it that it is probably the most functional exercise by far. If you are an athlete this move is crucial. Most importantly everyone and I mean everyone has had to lift something heavy and put it on a high shelf.

If it’s so important why isn’t it done? I think that it’s because there are a lot of moving parts and that for lack of a better term confuses people. Some people have trouble using the legs to launch the weights into position. So let’s split it up into it’s base components for the workout of the week.

As many rounds in 10 minutes.

Mission X Update:

Hi everyone! a couple months ago I made a post asking people to send me letters that I will be passing on to the inventor of muggle quidditch, Xander Manshel.

So far I’ve received 6 letters… which issss… less than I wanted, but at the same time, perhaps more than I should have expected for the digital generation (that whole writing stuff down, putting paper in envelopes, buying postage and having to actually go outside to another building to send things is admittedly annoying, and I mean that sincerely).

However, I’d really like to have at least 20 letters and ideally somewhere closer to 30 to give to Xander. This guy did come up with this idea, and without him, you wouldn’t be playing quidditch and would probably not know most or all of the people on your team. Just think about how crazy that is.

So, the goal here is to tell Xander how much quidditch means to you and what it did for your life, and also to ask him to come to the World Cup this april. He hasn’t been to World Cup since the second one in 2008, and we need to change that.

Farewell to a friend

I took a break away from my new ritual to say goodbye to a friend. I got Firenze nine years ago in June. She was a ball of fur barely bigger than my fist. I can’t tell you what won me over the other kittens that were there but I’d like to think that she picked me. Over the years I never stopped calling her kitten. She was a source of happiness and comfort to me. My constant in the last nine very exciting and turbulent years of my life. The other day when I said goodbye for the last time I experienced true heartbreak as even as she could barely walk she was still trying to comfort me like she had anytime I was upset. Firenze I don’t know how you did it but you made everyone you met fall in love with you. I’m just glad that I am your human. I’m going to miss you a lot. Goodbye kitten.

I didn’t run substitutions at regionals (I was running logisitics for the tournament) and while we do like to have fun, and SHOULD, we also played to win and played our best players, so all of your information is dead wrong.

If the badassilisks didn’t have such a bad coach, Clay, and played the right personnel they would have qualified. The way they sub certain people in so everyone can have fun is why they failed, not because they were a community team. They took their whimsical attitude and expected to qualify for a competitive tournament, it just doesn’t work that way. As for Steel City, they didn’t have much individual talent like Panico says. They had a decent beater in “Big Sean” and a powerful keeper, but that was it. Panico himself is sub par, at Regionals especially, since he was seeking instead of chasing due to lack of players. This years senior class has one of the highest concentration of talent, so there is definitely going to be a big boom in terms of Community teams.

Even your own players said certain people shouldn’t have been playing certain times. If you believe your best played, but some of your better players don’t seem to agree, maybe you should talk to them.

Look here is my thing you are perfectly entitled to have an opinion and opinions are like assholes because everybody’s got one. However, hiding behind anonymity is so over in this sport (insert slang term for proper gender identification here). True people who cover sports stick their reputations out on the line when they post their opinions. So what are you afraid of?

That being said. We played to win in that tournament. Every damn Badassilisk that stepped onto that pitch was there to win those games. Any player that you spoke to that said otherwise might have been licking their wounds from a loss. As an athlete that happens. These opinions that you claimed as evidence are just opinions as well. Would they have talked to you about this had they known it was going to be used in an argument against their coach? They probably thought they were talking to a friend, someone they could just blow off steam with. A friend who wouldn’t take their words and troll their team like that. So here is my challenge to you. One, back up your argument with facts. If you have players in mind that shouldn’t have been on the pitch at crucial times call them out. The problem is I don’t think you know enough about the Badassilisks to do so. Two, Cast off your mask and own your words. I can’t guarantee you’ll keep any friends but at least if you make statements like this people can respect the fact that you stabbed them in the front.

First of all people. It takes 15 people to play this damn game so respect each and every person who wants to put a broom between their legs. To those people who claim certain areas aren’t as competitive I will just point out the old adage to be careful how you treat people on the way up because you will never know who you will meet on the way down.

Now here is my take on this issue of the seekers and snitches having too much power. Aside from being a Quidditch purist I don’t believe anything should change at all.

For all of you people who cringe when the books are mentioned or that seeker/snitches are a plot device. We wouldn’t be having this discussion without said plot device. That being said, other sports have equally strange and ridiculous starts like.

A teacher wanting to keep his students occupied on a rainy day decided to throw a ball into a peach basket.

Or…

Someone coming up with a non lethal ground acquisition game as a house rules alternative to rugby. Ladies and gentlemen American Football in all it’s spender is War and Rugby’s Sarcastaball. They wanted war without the fatal injury rate. They wanted Rugby but they wanted to wear helmets, shoulder pads and tight pants.

To the seeker/snitch argument. The game as a whole is fine. I agree there has to be better well trained snitches Because the seekers are getting better. Some people don’t like the fact that an external factor can determine the outcome of a game. Well any fighter who has lost a match in a split decision knows your pain. Their trainers and coaches don’t cry for a change in the scoring system they simply tell their fighters to not let it go to the judges. It took four matches for The guy who lost three split decisions to Manny Pacquiao to grasp that concept.

I say…If you don’t want to lose on a snitch grab don’t be within snitch range. I’d personally take this guys stance on the issue.

I was reading one of my favorite sales ezines this morning and an interesting article was featured by a guy named Hal Elrod. He talks about his personal development system called the “Miracle Morning”. Basically making sure you set aside time for you every single day. He started with 6 ten minute segments that took up an hour called his Life S.A.V.E.R.S. I decided to start this morning by doing all of them and this is what I found.

Silence (meditation/prayer) - Hardest thing for me to do. I work in a noisy gym and I already have a problem silencing my mind. I’m pretty sure it will come more easily with practice.

Affirmation - Motivational guru Zig Ziglar passed away late last month and I decided to look over some of his quotes for affirmation. I chose the quote above to talk about here. More on that later…

Visualization - Second hardest thing on my list. I like to think that I have a good imagination but this was tough. I tried visualizing the engagement ring I wanted to get my girlfriend. I mean I like it, I have to put a ring on it.

Exercise - Easiest thing for me to do obviously. I decided to keep it simple and do as many rounds possible of the following exercises.

5 Knees to Elbows, 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 10 squats with 135lbs. I completed 4 rounds.

Reading - I continued reading the Art of Seduction. I like this book because they use a lot of historical examples to illustrate their points. So I got to read about Joan of Arc and Rasputin.

So here we are the last section of Life S.A.V.E.R.S. Journaling.

So this quote is important because I want to be a successful personal trainer and I tend to feel like I need to pay my dues to make this happen. There are times that when I get in this mode that I begin to push ahead without knowing what I really want. I also forsake comfort, relaxation and joy to reach this end goal of being successful. I dig in and plod forward ignoring, relationships and other important things in life. Which is funny in retrospection because when I deal with a weight loss client I tell them to relax, and enjoy the journey to their goal. So how do I break this mindset? I’m going to start by making sure that like my miracle morning I take at minimum an hour to focus on my relationships. Especially with my girlfriend Meret. I’ll keep you posted on how this goes because who knew that enjoyment would be hard.

When I was in college I played in a co-ed hockey league where there was a mostly female team(they had one guy). A lot of the guys in the league was against it and I was all for it. My mom always said if they suit up to play, play them equal. When the IQA announced this rule I was angry because of schools like Smith but after some thought I realized that this is a tough situation that the IQA had to make and stick hard to a rule on. I sympathisize with Smith’s plight in this situation considering one of the IQA’s core values is inclusion but if the IQA allows them to compete they have to let all male schools compete for the same reason. That being said can Smith and other same gendered schools open up recruiting to their community to pick up the players they need? There is nothing in the IQA rulebook that states that they can’t. Do the colleges themselves have rules against it? If that is an option, I think that it would be a good for lack of a better term compromise in this situation. They can find potential players in the surrounding community and maybe even be a destination for graduating Quidkids looking to continue playing after graduation.

I don’t understand why “if women’s schools get to play we’d have to allow men’s schools to play too” is often used as an argument for this new policy. Is the implication that co-ed and women’s teams wouldn’t be able to compete against a men’s team?? If that’s the case, I completely disagree. If there were a quidditch team at a men’s school, I’d be just as upset about their exclusion from the league.

First of all understand that I am on your side on this one. I don’t want any team to be excluded from playing. That being said this situation is not that not as simple as making exceptions.

Now let’s say the IQA makes an exception in all these cases I believe that Sausage Fest University which is a co-ed college will complain that it isn’t fair that all male single gender teams get to compete and they have to stick to a gender rule because they have trouble recruiting and maintaining female players. In all instances their only two women have to play the entire game while the remaining 21-25 male players have to take reduced playing time. God forbid they lose a woman to injury or they leave school because it would just kill their team for competition. The IQA isn’t being inclusive to them in this instance because of the gender rule.

If you think that this is a far fetched scenario think again because that was the reasoning that most teams got the IQA to reverse it’s gender rule they tried to enact last year changing the gender split to 4-3 over the current 5-2 split regardless of the gender of the seeker. These teams, claiming exclusion without thinking about it abused the gender rule to get their way. In the end hurting teams like Smith.

I have to say while I disagree with the rule at least the IQA is trying to being 100% consistent in it’s enforcement. Co-ed Social sports leagues like Zogsports allow all female teams but not all male teams. The IQA allows neither and is strictly enforcing the gender rule on all co-ed institutions. The give in this situation is that the IQA allows you to go outside of your student body to recruit players. I know that with single gender institutions it goes against what the school was founded on. I also realize that it might be harder to recruit in a given area but until a solution can be reached I say work with what is available to you. I just want to see you all on a pitch somewhere having a grand time playing Quidditch.
